This is one of those subjects that has to come out every once in a while, so here it is. For those who think that firearms are the ultimate fight stopper, think again. A knife far out performs any handheld firearm, with the exception of a shotgun. There's a rabbit hole; why a shotgun? Because shotguns have the ability to take chunks out of people, and that amount of force is literally able to kill in one massive hit. So, with the exception of the shotgun, yes the knife truly is the most effective killing tool. The problem with a knife is that one has to get very close to use this weapon. This is where firearms make more sense. Think of a firearm as your Jedi Force Push power. Seriously, a firearm affords you the ability to affect physical change to something or someone from a distance. Not to mention that a firearm has the ability to affect that behavior modification without having to kill your assailant. I would truly prefer to change someones intent with a pointed weapon and an order to leave than having to take their life. Even if I'm forced to shoot that person, firearms have a very low incidence of causing death. Bullets just aren't that good at killing people. A single slash from even a small blade can end a life. However, multiple hits from a handgun have been proven quite survivable.
