Is 9mm The BEST Round For Self-Defense?

When it comes to picking the best round for concealed carry, everyone seems to have an opinion. Over the years, I've tried different calibers, listened to experts, and done my own research. After all of that, I keep coming back to the 9mm as the best all-around choice for concealed carry. It’s got the right balance of power, capacity, and controllability, making it the go-to round for everyday carry. Let me break it down.

Great Ballistics

First off, let’s talk about ballistics. The 9mm has come a long way over the years. Modern bullet designs have improved dramatically, making it more effective than ever for self-defense. Hollow points like the Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Hornady Critical Defense expand well and create devastating wound channels while still penetrating deeply enough to reach vital organs. This means you get stopping power without over-penetration, which is a huge factor when carrying a gun for self-defense.

Manageable Recoil for Better Control

Another major advantage of the 9mm is recoil—or rather, the lack of it. Compared to larger calibers like .40 S&W or .45 ACP, the 9mm is much easier to control. This makes follow-up shots quicker and more accurate, which is critical in a defensive situation. A lot of people assume that bigger calibers automatically mean better stopping power, but if you can’t shoot them accurately, they don’t do you much good. I’d rather have a gun I can control follow-up shots with and shoot well rather than one that kicks like a mule and slows me down, especially with smaller carry guns.

Better Penetration than .380 ACP

Let’s also compare the 9mm to another popular concealed carry round: the .380 ACP. A lot of people like .380 because it’s easier to shoot and the guns chambered for it tend to be smaller. But here’s the issue—.380 lacks the penetration needed for consistent stopping power. While it can be effective with proper shot placement, it doesn’t meet the FBI’s penetration standards as reliably as the 9mm does. Simply put, the 9mm has more punch and better performance when it matters most.

High Availability

Another huge plus for the 9mm is availability. Whether you're in a big city or a small town, you can almost always find 9mm ammo. In times when ammo gets scarce, 9mm tends to be one of the first rounds to come back in stock because it’s used by so many people—both civilians and law enforcement. That means if you’re relying on your concealed carry gun to protect yourself, you won’t have to worry as much about running out of ammo or struggling to find it.

The Power of +P Ammo

Now, let’s talk about one of the more powerful options available within the 9mm family: +P ammo. This is overpressured ammunition that delivers higher velocity and more energy on impact. While it can be a great option for self-defense, it does have more recoil and puts extra wear on your gun. If you decide to carry +P, make sure your firearm is rated for it and that you practice with it before relying on it in a self-defense scenario. Don't be caught off guard by unexpected recoil when your life depends on it.

The Best Balance of Power and Shootability

At the end of the day, the 9mm is a great balance of power, capacity, and shootability. You get enough stopping power without excessive recoil, better penetration than a .380, and more manageable recoil than larger calibers like .40 S&W and .45 ACP. Plus, with its widespread availability and modern ballistics, you’re never at a disadvantage when carrying a 9mm.

If you’re looking for the best all-around concealed carry round, I can’t recommend the 9mm enough. It’s reliable, effective, and proven in real-world use. Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or just getting into concealed carry, the 9mm is a round you can trust to get the job done when it counts.

  • As a former LEO during the crack epidemic in NYC during the 80s and 80s and have seen the consistent failures of 9mm it’s a cartridge I’d never recommend unless the person is an amateur and needs a place to start. The ballistics of 9mm are horrible and the average "rounds on target " to stop a threat is 4-7 rounds, and why you see the overwhelming amount of videos of LEO shootings being “mag dump” shootings of bad guys…put plainly the 9mm rarely works as intended and is a poor choice. Whereas the 357Sig, 40S&W and 357mag all enjoy, ammo dependent, a “one shot stop” between 94% and 96%. Recoil is only slightly more felt than a P or +P 9mm and they are a far superior choice over 9mm for citizens when backup/911 is far away.
