Choosing Your Next Carry Handgun: Top Picks For Reliability And Performance

If you're in the market for your next concealed-carry handgun, the options can be overwhelming. There are a lot of good options out there, but the best choice is going to depend on your needs, experience level, and personal preferences. Whether you’re upgrading from your current everyday carry (EDC) or buying your first concealed firearm, here are some top recommendations based on reliability, size, capacity, and ease of carry.

Key Factors to Consider

Before diving into specific models, here are a few things to think about when choosing a concealed-carry gun:

  • Size & Weight: A compact or subcompact handgun is easier to conceal without sacrificing too much control.
  • Capacity: Balancing firepower with comfort is crucial. Some prefer a higher round count, while others prioritize a slimmer profile.
  • Caliber: 9mm is the most popular choice due to its balance of stopping power, capacity, and manageable recoil.
  • Reliability: A concealed carry gun needs to function flawlessly in life-or-death situations.
  • Ergonomics: The gun should feel comfortable in your hand, with a good grip and controls that suit you.

Top Concealed Carry Handgun Recommendations

1. Sig Sauer P365 X

The Sig P365 revolutionized the concealed carry world with its high capacity in a small frame back in 2018, holding 10 + 1 rounds. The P365 X holds 12 + 1 rounds in a micro-compact design; it is lightweight, reliable, and offers really good ergonomics. Its crisp trigger and night sights make it a favorite among EDC carriers.

One great feature is the proprietary Fire Control Unit (FCU) that allows the end-user to customize the gun’s frame to suit their needs better while still owning the same firearm. If the firearm is not slim and easy to conceal already, the fact that you can customize it even more to your needs is simply awesome. The aftermarket support is also great. Some early models had striker issues, but this problem was resolved quickly. The price may be a bit high, but I think the quality and features of this gun justify the cost.

2. Glock 43X MOS

Glock is synonymous with reliability, and the Glock 43X MOS (Modular Optic System) is an excellent choice for those who want a slim, reliable pistol with the option to mount a red dot sight. It holds 10 rounds but can use Shield Arms’ 15-round magazines for added capacity.

This gun is considered incredibly reliable and easy to shoot and control. The “optics ready” slide makes it ready for red dot sights which is a big plus for many shooters out there. It is slightly larger than many micro-compacts and the standard capacity is lower than some competitors. With that being said, this is my “go-to” gun for EDC.

3. Springfield Hellcat

Springfield’s Hellcat offers a 13+1 capacity in a compact frame, making it one of the highest-capacity micro-compact pistols available. It features excellent texturing for grip, a flat trigger for precise shooting, and an optional optics-ready variant.

The high capacity of a micro-compact is impressive. The grips and ergonomics of this gun are very good. It shoots straight and is considered reliable. Some say it has more felt recoil, but I’ve shot many micro-compacts; honestly, they all have that snappy feel to them. The trigger is “ok,” but like most popular guns, there are aftermarket products to make something that seems ok, way better.

4. Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus

The Shield has long been a favorite for concealed carry, and the Shield Plus improves upon the classic design with a higher 13-round capacity and a much-improved trigger. It’s slim, lightweight, and well-suited for everyday carry.

This is a great option for concealed carry, offering a slim and comfortable design. One of its standout features is the trigger upgrade compared to previous models. This new trigger provides a smoother and more responsive pull. However, it does have limited aftermarket support compared to Glock or Sig pistols.  Some may find the grip too abrasive, which I never understood other than it being aggressive enough to where your clothing can actually grab onto it as you pull up your shirt to grab your gun, but this isn’t the case here.

My Final Thoughts

These are just a few options that many find to work very well with concealed carry. There are many more out there. Take the time and do your research when choosing your next concealed carry handgun, and know that personal preference plays a huge role. The best gun for you is the one you can shoot comfortably, conceal easily, and trust with your life. Always train regularly to stay proficient.
